a firm foundation

These days we're trying to build on a firm foundation in more ways than one.
Sure, we want this house renovation to be built on a solid slab---firm and strong.
No cracks, no sinking, no crumbling over time.
After all, a firm foundation is what keeps all the other parts of the house together.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain.
And so it is with our life.
If this incredible gift we have called life, is built on a firm foundation...
a foundation of faith in God, trust in Him
and on the solid slab of knowing He has our best interest at heart...
then we will be strong and able to endure any possible cracks or crumbling that may come our way.

So we grabbed a few Sharpie markers and our Bible
and headed to see the house renovation progress the other evening.
It was a special time as we wanted to cover the studs with prayers, scripture and blessings.
Who knows who may renovate our renovation in the years to come?
Here are a few of the highlights
and I am certain we're not done writing on the walls.

Thoughts on this?
Have you ever blessed your home or renovation in this way.
Other ideas?
Would love to hear from you...
xoxo,
Caroline

  1. When we remodeled, we threw a party where the kids and their friends were allowed to hammer and destroy the walls we were about to rip out... great fun for boys! I will never forget the noise and energy.

Then just before the drywall went on we did what you did and wrote scriptures that were special to us on the studs. A much quieter but more meaningful and more private celebration that time. We loved it as you did. When we moved out we knew those who had moved in would likely never know the blessings written on those walls, but we prayed that the house would nourish and bless them as it had us.

So fun to see your house going up! Blessings at the beach this week, dear friend, and a wonderful resurrection celebration on Sunday!

  2. What a COOL idea!! i love it! I've never thought of this and will definitely remember this idea if I ever have the opportunity. We've certainly prayed over, around, and through our house and have annointed the doorways with oil. A couple weeks ago someone sang a song that touched me so powerfully right where I needed it. God gave me the idea of putting one of the lines (from Ps 27) on the door frame of our main door so we'll see it every time we leave the house and enter the "world".

I've been trying to decide how to do it since we have the original beautiful 4" oak trim in our 100 yr old house and may be looking to move in the next few years. Part of me doesn't want to make it permanent, but then there's the whole obedience/trust factor that this won't effect a future sale, but rather be a blessing to the next owners as well. But there's also the factor that i want it to look neat and my writing/painting skills are pretty limited. So, I need some ideas. HELP please? I've thought of woodburning, but don't have the equipment.

I'm not sure which words to use yet, but some version of these words from a song based on Ps 27 "The LORD is my Strength/Light/Refuge and my Salvation/Fortress, WHOM shall I fear? He is a Stong Tower in a time of trouble."

We have intentionally lived in an urban neighborhood for the last 18 yrs. Since buying this house 7 yrs ago, we have faced incredible spiritual battles with a lot of violence. When I heard this song a couple weeks ago, God just spoke to me that His strength and power are like the gates of the city - they guard all those who enter. Our doorposts are similar to the gates in that it protects our family. And I was reminded of God telling the Isrealites to write His commands on the door posts of their homes. God reminded me that I have no reason to live in fear, b/c HE is my Fortress!

I didn't realize how many of my daily decisions have become ruled by fear.....where and when I'll let my kids play outside, putting on a guardedness everytime I walk out of the house, wondering which nights I will hear gunshots and need to call the police, even wondering who may come talking to me through an open window while I watch tv at night - yes, last week a drunk man had quite a conversation with me. In retrospect, it was quite funny! LOL But, at the time I did not know how safe I was. Last night he knocked on our window around 10 pm while my daughter I watched tv and my husband was already in bed.

So, any ideas????? I NEED this daily reminder that I walk in the Strength and Peace of the Lord every time I leave/enter my house or answer my door, not knowing what I will be confronted with. I want to live with JOY and PEACE.
